The Gathering— a time and a place to decompress from the rigors of travel, meet friends old and new, make the transition to WisCon space-time, and get into the WisCon frame of mind! Refreshments, fun activities, and relaxation all await you at the Gathering.
Last year’s Gathering was a huge success, and for WisCon 32, we are looking to expand upon that success. We have hoping to bring back some of our favorite past activities, as well as offer new ones.
Here is a sampling of some of the activities we are would like to offer and for which we are looking for volunteers: Acoustic Filking; Balloon hats and animals; Bellydance Demos; Brain Bump Analysis; Facepainting; Hair Braiding; Henna Tattoos; Knitting Circle; Make your Own Button; Massage; Namebadge Necklaces & Knotted Badge Strings; Numerology; Palm Readings; Quilting and other stichery; Rubber Stamps; Runes; Storytelling; Tarot Reading; and Temporary Tattoos. Or do you have another idea? Volunteer to host a table or suggest a new idea by writing us at gathering32@wiscon.info.
This is the event when WisCon welcomes everyone and officially begins the weekend of programming. Guests of Honor are introduced at Opening Ceremonies, last minute announcements are be made, and a short (usually humorous) entertainment is provided.
Dessert Salon
GoH Speeches
This Guest of Honor event is the high point of WisCon programming; it's the formal event at which we honor our guests and listen to what they have to say to us. In the past, guests have given us rallying calls to political action, humorous anecdotes, scholarly treatises, exposés, autobiographical histories, earthshaking ideas and passionate and lyrical speeches. Sometimes they have even had far-reaching consequences. For instance, Pat Murphy initiated the Tiptree Award as part of her 1991 GoH speech at WisCon 15.
No programming is scheduled against the speeches and a dessert salon is scheduled immediately before it to celebrate the importance of the event.
Dessert Salon ticket-holders are admitted to the room on Sunday at the appointed time. After the Salon is over, the doors will be opened so that any member of the convention may enter for the Guest of Honor speeches. There will be some seating and standing room available in the ballrooms for those without Dessert Salon tickets for the Guests of Honor speeches and the Award ceremonies.
Attention all writers and seekers of autographs! Pros and those who like to hang out with them! Come to the Sign Out, a signing party and WisCon farewell rolled into one! Writers and those who love them will gather together to sign and get signatures, to thank and praise and schmooze one last time before we fly away for another year. This year will have many more writers participating!
You can volunteer to help at this event (and it's lots of fun!) by contacting the volunteer coordinator by clicking here. We're looking forward to seeing you all there!
The Dead Dog Party is the last event of the convention. It is when everyone is tired as a dead dog, but can't bear to go home yet. So we sit around with our friends and something to eat and drink and talk about our weekends … and make plans for next year's WisCon! Details of the Dead Dog Party are announced at the convention. Watch the convention newsletter for information.
